Abstract
Purpose: This study was to analyze the efficiency of nurse activities by observing the working hours and activities of the nurses in the pediatric ward.

Method: This observe was conducted between August 7, 2009 and August 19, 2009, on the nursing care activities in the pediatric ward involving 13 day duty nurses.

Result: Each nurse took care an average of 12.54 patients during this period of time. Among nursing activities, direct nursing took up 54.37%(4hours 51min 9sec) of the total activity hours(8hours 57min). The most portion of direct nursing was IV injection, with an average of 32min 4sec. On the other hand, indirect nursing took up 45.63%(4hours 5min)
of total activity hours. Of indirect nursing, computer work took the most time with an average of 2hours 47min 57sec. Computer work was mainly focused on computerizing medical records, which took an average of 57min 4sec. The average overtime was 57min.

Conclusion: These results suggested that there were insufficient number of nurses compared to the amount of nursing activities that had to be done. Therefore, the utmost priority should be placed on obtaining and maintaining sufficient number of nurses so that nursing activities become efficient.
